Description

GSO is seeking an experienced, politically-informed, results driven communications professional to oversee the growth of the Communications Department and lead the department’s strategic development and daily execution of an ambitious agenda to end poverty. The Communications and Marketing Director will oversee all communications and marketing strategies and operations at GSO, including print and online publications, earned media, brand strategies and social, online and traditional media. They will work closely with the Organizing & Community Engagement Director and other senior staff to develop and implement multi-channel campaigns designed for impact. The ideal candidate will be passionate about ending poverty, deeply knowledgeable about the power of authentic storytelling to inform and inspire, and experienced in building a brand and a narrative that reaches not only low-income communities of color but also a national audience of donors, advocates, volunteers, policymakers, and corporate and community partners. GSO is led by doers, and the person coming into this role should be ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work on Day One.

The Communications and Marketing Director reports directly to the GSO President and will manage/lead the communications department staff and external consultants. This director should have an entrepreneurial spirit and see the opportunities within our day to day engagements.

Location: Remote, based in California, Los Angeles or the Bay Area preferred.
Candidates must be able to work from home and feel comfortable frequently engaging with colleagues and partners by phone, video conference, email, Slack, Asana, and other digital communications tools and platforms. Travel, when safe, is expected as well as some nights and weekends.

Start Date: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The position will be filled as soon as possible.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a communications and marketing team, setting goals and promoting accountability while identifying and supporting professional development opportunities for team members
  • Manage department budget, understanding the difference between an organizational budget and grant funded initiatives
  • Oversee teams working on digital engagement, social media strategies and list building.
  • Strengthen Golden State Opportunity’s organizational messaging, aligning across all channels and developing engaging narratives to amplify our impact
  • Increase awareness and understanding of Golden State Opportunity, its programs, and its impact across multiple audiences
  • Lead and implement a rebranding process and maintain quality and consistency of GSO’s brand, credibility, and voice throughout all external communications
  • Identify or create moments to generate visibility for GSO and its leadership
  • Write and/or edit op-eds and other thought leadership pieces and news release; review and approve partner news releases as appropriate
  • Develop grassroots leaders, allies, and staff as spokespeople to share stories and deliver compelling messages
  • Coordinate with the Campaigns Team to support outreach, education and advocacy campaigns
  • Monitor local, state, and national newsmedia for relevant stories and hooks and coordinate timely responses to emerging media opportunities
  • Help position GSO as ‘go-to’ source for media on its issue areas
  • Utilize data, instinct, and experience to create and meet goals and metrics
  • Manage vendors for multiple grant deliverables

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for the Communications and Marketing with Golden State Opportunity begins at $150,000 and is commensurate with the experience of the selected candidate.

Requirements

Skills & Experience

  • 10+ years of management experience in the public relations or communications field
  • Demonstrated leadership in planning and executing a comprehensive strategic communications program, balancing short- and longer-term objectives while dealing with the big picture
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including strong editing skills
  • Track record of creative use of new media technologies and design to advance goals
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, collaborative work style and excellent management skills
  • Experience with brand creation and management
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and lead multiple projects, activities, and actions with competing deadlines and levels of urgency
  • Existing relationships with California and national media outlets, especially in the financial and political sectors
  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Deep passion for economic equity and belief in GSO’s mission and theory of change
