The Director of Development and Communications will be expected to develop and execute an annual fund development strategy that grows and maximizes contributed revenue and incorporates external communications into all aspects of the fundraising plan. 

This position oversees the development programs of Old Mission Santa Barbara, including the Restore and Renew Capital Campaign and associated fundraising events including the annual Gala, Drinks at Dusk, and Sip and Stroll; cultivating and maintaining donor relations; coordinating and managing major on-going fundraising for long-term sustainability and annual operations.

Additionally, the Director of Development and Communications oversees, develops, and implements marketing and public relations, external and internal communications of the Mission, and as chair of the Communications Committee, coordinates messaging and marketing among the Greater Mission entities so that communications are mutually beneficial and in line with the Mission’s mission and our Franciscan values.


 Fundraising and Donor Relations

  • Coordinate the Restore and Renew Capital campaign to meet annual campaign goals by September 2023.
  • Oversee ongoing giving programs and fundraising initiatives to meet annual fundraising goals for operations.
  • Cultivate legacy gifts to support long-term sustainability of the Mission.
  • Cultivate, maintain, and retain donors through regular communications, gratitude events, and other means of acknowledging philanthropic gifts.
  • Maintain donor database, ensure overall data integrity, and ensure timely gift acknowledgement and recognition.
  • Oversee fundraising events and working collaborative with other Mission staff on these events, including the annual Gala, Drinks at Dusk, and Sip & Stroll. Oversight includes keeping these events within budget, accounting for event revenue and expenses, and meeting fundraising goals. Duties also include securing individual and corporate sponsorships and event volunteers as necessary.
  • Research foundation prospects for capital and core operations, build relationships with institutional donors, oversee grant-writing efforts, manage the grants calendar, and ensure timely reporting
  • Develop and produce development reports to improve fund operations and manage the regular distribution of fundraising data.

Mission Marketing and Communications

  • As chair of the Communications Committee, oversee and coordinate the overall marketing and communication plans; the production of advertisements, promotional materials, and social media posts; the updating and maintenance of the website; the production of press releases and media kits.
  • Oversee the preparation of OMSB’s publications, such as employee newsletters for internal audiences, communications for external stakeholders and the public, and the creation and publication of an Annual Report.
  • Hire and supervise support staff to assist with marketing and communications.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years direct experience in a nonprofit fundraising environment with demonstrated success with nonprofit fundraising.
  • Experience in maintaining and cultivating major donor relations.
  • Familiarity with philanthropic community in Central Coast of California preferred.
  • Experience with managing and using data and technology to improve Development operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe, Google Suite, and Bloomerang or similar donor database. 
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to work well alone and as part of a team.
  • Ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work within a Franciscan organizational culture.
